April 12,
2013, Toronto, Ont. (Marketwire) – The Consulting Engineers of Ontario
congratulates the City of Toronto on investing $155 million on improved
infrastructure this year – and investing more in future years.
Representing
200 engineering firms in Ontario, CEO congratulated the mayor yesterday for
going beyond filling potholes.
"We
have an infrastructure deficit in this province that dwarfs our visible deficit,"
said Barry Steinberg, Chief Executive Officer of CEO. "Recent events have
been encouraging."
On April
9, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford announced that the city will spend $155 million on
road and bridge repair this summer, part of $2.9 billion over the next 10
years. In addition, Ford said the City could invest another $17 million on
repairing the Gardiner Expressway this year.
"Our
roads, bridges, water and waste-water systems are assets owned by the
public," Steinberg said. "All assets, like our homes, require
constant attention and reinvestment. CEO is encouraged by Toronto's
announcement to attack the city's infrastructure deficit over the next ten
years," he added. "CEO will continue to strongly encourage
governments, at all levels, to invest in infrastructure over the long
term."
