Safety enhancements coming to Mile 28 Level Crossing

Travellers along Highway 16 will soon benefit from a $5-million project to enhance safety at the Canadian National rail crossing outside Terrace.

This project, scheduled to start summer 2019, will include upgrades to guardrails to meet updated engineering standards. It will also include more visual cues for drivers, such as speed reader boards and upgrades to advance flashing signs.

The safety enhancements will replace the Mile 28 Daumont Level Crossing project, a planned 120-metre-long bridge along with associated highway upgrades. That project has been deferred to a later date due to escalating project costs.

Initially budgeted in 2015 at $37 million ($19.5 million in provincial and $17.5 million in federal funds), significant changes to the construction landscape since then have led to a revised project budget, with the provincial contribution now more than double. The final design for the Mile 28 Daumont Level Crossing project will be considered “shelf ready” to allow for project delivery at a later date.
