Blasting begins this week on Highway 1 widening project

Dec. 3, 2019 – Drivers are advised that rock blasting will begin this week on the project to widen Highway 1 to four lanes between the Leigh Road Interchange and West Shore Parkway.

Between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on weekdays through spring 2020, people travelling this section of Highway 1 can expect intermittent delays of up to 20 minutes for blasting activity.

There will be no southbound closures or stoppages between 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and no northbound closures or stoppages between 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Northbound traffic will continue to merge to one lane at the Leigh Road interchange as normal.

To allow crews to safely work on the northbound shoulder, it is necessary to shift northbound traffic to one of the southbound lanes outside of the morning rush hour. This means drivers can expect single-lane traffic in each direction from 9 a.m. until close of work each day.

There will be no construction from Friday evening through Sunday for the foreseeable future. However, as construction progresses, there may be periods of weekend activity that require lane closures and periodic stoppages.

Drivers are advised to use caution, follow the directions of traffic control personnel, and obey the construction speed zone limit of 60 km/h when in place. For updates, motorists are advised to check: DriveBC.ca

When completed, Highway 1 between the Leigh Road interchange and the West Shore Parkway signal will be widened to four lanes with median-barrier separation and improved roadside protections.
