Amma Wakefield wins the OAPC Bleeds Black Award
December 14, 2021 By Rock to Road staff
Amma Wakefield has received the 2021 Bleeds Black Award from the Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council (OAPC).
The award was presented during the OAPC’s annual Fall Asphalt Seminar. The virtual seminar brought together over 120 industry leaders and stakeholders.
The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and passion to the continual improvement of asphalt throughout their career.
The inception of the award is credited to a past OAPC director who in 2012 described an individual as “his passion and commitment for all things asphalt is so great that when cut, he bleeds black.”
Wakefield holds a Masters of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering, and has worked in product development, testing and research positions within the construction industry for several companies, including LaFarge, The Miller Group and Aecon. Wakefield recently defended her PhD thesis with her research focus on improving the durability of the roadway material at McMaster University under the direction of Dr. Susan Tighe. In 2015, she was named to Rock to Road’s Top 10 Under 40.
“(Amma) has been involved in the development and application of numerous asphalt technologies and materials. Her knowledge is often sought after for numerous paving projects,” Tighe said. “On a personal note, I have watched Amma and admired her growth into the professional she is today. She is passionate and her excitement about asphalt is truly infectious.”
