June 22, 2017  By LafargeHolcim

June 22, 2017 – LafargeHolcim’s operations in Canada obtained the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) certificates for Responsibly Sourced Concrete for a ready mix concrete plant in Burlington, Ont. and a ready mix concrete plant in Edmonton, Alta.

Both plants received CSC bronze level certification for operating in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible way. In particular, the plants were recognized for having a clear chain of custody for materials, demonstrating a commitment to responsible sourcing. Other highlights included achieving zero waste water discharge due to high recycled water use and having a strong health and safety program. This is the first time that plants of any building materials company in North America have been recognized with this type of certificate.

Pascal Casanova, Region Head North America of LafargeHolcim stated: “We are very proud being the first to receive this certification in North America and to supply certified responsibly sourced concrete to our customers We consider sustainability to be both a responsibility and a business opportunity. We encourage the whole construction sector to play its part in responsibly sourcing concrete.”

The CSC Responsible Sourcing System for Concrete has been developed by the CSC together with a large group from the industry as well as certification institutes. LafargeHolcim is a founding member of the council. The Responsible Sourcing System is designed to provide transparency on the environmental, social and economic responsibility of concrete, cement and aggregate companies’ operations and their supply chains. By creating a global certification system for responsibly sourced concrete, the CSC aims to foster continuous improvement in the concrete sector. It additionally seeks to highlight the essential role of concrete in creating a sustainable construction sector.

In the future LafargeHolcim will seek to obtain more such certifications in all geographic areas where it operates as sustainability is one of the four global strategic pillars for the LafargeHolcim Group. According to its 2030 Plan, the LafargeHolcim Sustainability Strategy, the Group will generate one third of net sales from building solutions with enhanced sustainability performance by 2030.
