May 29, 2017 – On May 27, Canada Building Materials (CBM) hosted their annual open house at its Sunderland Sand & Gravel Pit. The event offered the public a behind the scenes look at the facilities and operations at the Sunderland Pit, which has provided raw materials for construction projects in the Greater Toronto Area for decades, including the iconic CN Tower.

CBM also recently partnered with Forests Ontario to convert 25 acres of the Sunderland Pit into productive forest through the Durham 5 Million Tree Program (Durham 5 MTP) by planting 20,000 trees on the property.

The Durham 5MTP was launched as part of the Durham Region Climate Change Local Action Plan, which established key objectives to reduce emissions by 20 per cent, including the planting of five million trees across Durham’s eight municipalities by 2023.

“We’ve had more than 4,000 landowners across Ontario join us to plant trees on their property through our various programs,” says Rob Keen, CEO of Forests Ontario. “This event is a chance to show the program in action and connect with Durham residents to build awareness of how the Durham 5 Million Tree Program can serve as an important resource and opportunity for landowners and businesses in the region.”

“Our open house is a way to bring together a family-friendly event and a way to meet our neighbours. Attendees can see what we do, how we do it, ask questions about our operations, and understand first-hand how we contribute to stewardship and respect the needs of our communities in the present and for the future,” added Mike LeBreton, land and resource manager for CBM’s Aggregates Division.
