Abandoned Michipicoten Harbour now producing granite

October 17, 2022  By  Don Horne

The Superior Aggregates Co. has opened a granite quarry at Michipicoten Bay, Ont., with about half of the new quarry’s granite products to be sold into the Ontario market, including the GTA, with the rest going to U.S. markets.

This came after it received the go-ahead from the Ontario Municipal Board.

During the late 1990s when Algoma Steel began switching over to using higher grades of iron ore mined in the Michigan Upper Penninsula, and in 1998 the mine and sinter plant at Wawa closed down. With the sole source of traffic on the branch eliminated, the railway filed for abandonment of the line, and in 2000 the tracks from Hawk Junction to Michipicoten were removed.
