June 24, 2016 – Phase 1 of the Highway 407 East Project extension project, which includes Highway 407 from Brock Road in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa, and Highway 412, which connects Highways 407 and 401, opened to the public on June 20, 2016.

The completion of Phase 1 has opened approximately 148 new lane kilometres, including 11 interchanges, 31 water-crossing structures, and 16 municipal road crossings.

Both the 407 extension and the new toll highway 412 will operate toll-free until 2017, according to a recent statement from the Province of Ontario. Tolls and fees will remain in effect on 407 ETR, west of the Brock Road Interchange.

The project, which began in May 2012, took just over four years to complete. There were upwards of 1,000 workers and 50 contractors employed on the project during the peak stages of its construction.

The second and final phase includes constructing Highway 407 eastward from Harmony Road to Highway 35/115 and Highway 418, which connects Highways 407 and 401.  Phase 2 is expected to be complete by late 2020, with an interim opening in late 2017.
