Road improvements on deck for Highway 6

February 24, 2017 – The upcoming construction season will bring safer travelling conditions to an important route linking the Okanagan to West Kootenay, as two projects get underway on Highway 6.

“Two separate projects will take place this upcoming construction season that will improve driving conditions for those who frequent this route,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Close to $3 million in resurfacing improvements are on the way for Highway 6.”

The projects begin approximately 35 kilometres east of Lumby.

“As a responsible government, we want to strategically invest in safe infrastructure that will help drive our economy and benefit local communities,” said Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster. “The improvements to Highway 6 will help keep our local, commercial and tourist traffic safe as they travel along B.C.’s interior.”

Under the first project, O.K. Industries Ltd. has been awarded a $1.5-million contract to seal-coat an 11-kilometre section of highway from Creighton Valley Road to the Gold Pan Café and a 20-kilometre section from West Kettle Forest Service Road to Lightning Peak Road.

A $1.3-million contract has been awarded to Okanagan Aggregates Ltd. for the second project, which involves paving approximately nine kilometres of highway between the Gold Pan Café and West Kettle Forest Service Road.

As part of B.C. on the Move, the province’s 10-year transportation plan, the ministry will be investing $643 million in road rehabilitation over the next three years. A safe and reliable highway and side-road network is essential to the continued growth and development of B.C.’s communities and supporting provincial and regional economies.
