Sinkhole opens on Manitoba highway

July 8, 2015 – Highway crews in Manitoba were left scrambling last weekend after a massive sinkhole opened up on a portion of Highway 83.

According to a report from the CBC, the sinkhole between Roblin and Asessippi Provincial Park, northwest of Winnipeg near the Saskatchewan border, was approximately 200 metres wide and five metres deep.

The soil in the region had been weakened by an approximate rainfall of 300mm over the past month, which Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton believed was the reason for the sinkhole.

A geotechnical expert was brought in to assess the damage.
