Nipigon Bridge reopens

February 25, 2016  By  Andrew Macklin

February 25, 2016 – The Nipigon Bridge has fully reopened to two-way traffic, six weeks after the brand new structure was closed due to a joint shift.

According to an article from the CBC, the $106 million bridge, which officially opened in November, would resume two-way traffic today following repairs to the bridge.

The Nipigon Bridge, part of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Thunder Bay, separated from the abutment attaching it to the riverbank’s edge, causing one deck to lift approximately two feet. It is suspected that cold weather was the cause of the lift, however, two labs are working to test the bolts to discover the cause of the problem.
