February 5, 2016  By  Andrew Macklin

February 5, 2016 – Drone technology is making its official entrance into the construction industry that to an agreement between a military equipment superpower and one of North America’s leading technology solutions distributors.

One day three at World of Concrete in Las Vegas, we shifted our focus to two new drones being offered to the construction industry by Geoshack, which has distribution offices in two Canadian provinces and eight U.S. states.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) being offered by Geoshack are from Lockheed Martin, one of the largest manufacturers of military equipment. Geoshack has concentrated on two mobile mapping solutions, with a fixed wing and quad-copter option available.

The Phoenix Mapper fixed-wing drone uses hand launch deployment and possesses a maximum speed of 45mph. The Phoenix has professional-grade Kestrel autopilot built-in and is built for difficult weather and geographic conditions. The Phoenix contains a QX-10 RGB camera equipped with an18.2 mega-pixel Sony G Lens with 10x optical zoom. It offers a multi/micro USB terminal for input and output of information.

The Indago Mapper quad-copter uses single-pass mapping with a precision flight system to provide software-generated infographic renderings of the jobsite. Like the Phoenix, the Indago utilizes a QX-10 RGB camera with an 18.2MP Sony G Lens with 10x optical zoom to provide high-resolution imagery.

Both lightweight mapping options provide a new option for stockpile management, land surveying, and jobsite progression options for both pit/quarry operations and road construction contractors throughout Canada.
