December 3, 2015 – The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has released its framework document for proposed changes to the province’s Aggregate Resources Act.
The 36-page document entitled, A Blueprint for Change – A proposal to modernize and strengthen the Aggregate Resources Act policy framework, provides an overview of what MNRF would like to implement in the revision of the act.
In conversation with James Gordon, chair of the board of the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association and materials manager for Fowler Construction, he told us the document represents real progress in the engagement of the aggregates industry.
“We like a lot of what is coming out of MNRF, and this blueprint provides some real, positive changes,” Gordon says. “The document is a great opportunity for both sides to move ahead.”
For Gordon, and OSSGA, the focal point of the framework provided in the blueprint is the impact some of the suggested changes could have in regards to existing operations.
“We want to make sure that any already-licensed resources continue to be protected,” Gordon says. “Anything that is brought in with the changes to the ARA cannot put into jeopardy the work that our members have already done.”
Gordon notes that the document will serve as the foundation for legislative, provincial standards, regulations and policy amendments for years to come. “We need to ensure that the voices of all producers are heard, and that the changes help create an industry that continues to build communities and infrastructure across Ontario.”
