Repairs to Overpass in Merritt, B.C. Underway
Aug. 6, 2010 – Repairs to the Walloper overpass on Highway 5 in Merritt, B.C. have begun, ensuring safe access to three provincial parks and the community of Logan Lake along Highway 97D.

“Since the Coquihalla Highway was constructed, visitors have used the Walloper overpass to access the great outdoor recreation available in this beautiful part of our province,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond. “These repairs will prolong the life of the structure, which provides safe access to Highway 97D from the Coquihalla.”

A contract for $990,000 was awarded to Cortez Construction of Kamloops to repair the 24-year-old overpass. The project includes the replacement of the expansion bearings and joints and a concrete deck overlay to prolong the life of the structure.

Work is scheduled to be completed in October.

Highway 97D will be open to single-lane alternating traffic for the duration of the construction. Highway 5 will have single-lane closures during periods of active work.

The Walloper overpass carries Highway 97D (Meadow Creek Road) over Highway 5, 37 km south of Kamloops. It provides access to the community of Logan Lake and provincial parks at Walloper Lake, Lac Le Jeune and McConnell Lake.
