June 30, 2010, Pender Harbour, B.C. – The province of British Columbia has awarded a $1.19-million contract to construct the Meadow Creek Bridge on Garden Bay Road in Pender Harbour, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond announced June 29.
“Garden Bay Road is a vital route for residents, commercial traffic and tourists,” said Bond. “The new Meadow Creek Bridge will ensure the corridor continues to serve as a reliable route and replace the existing culvert, ensuring the sustainability of a valuable fish stream.”
The project will replace the two existing culverts with a new concrete structure. This will allow fish to pass under this crossing and help prevent flooding in the area.
A contract was awarded to BG MacDonald Services Ltd. of Kelowna. Work is expected to begin this July and finish by December. Motorists can expect single-lane alternating traffic with minor delays during construction.
The federal contribution to this project comes from the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects. Since March 2009, almost 400 projects have received a total federal investment of over $500 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across British Columbia.
Since October 2008, over $5.3 billion in infrastructure projects have been announced across British Columbia, which are estimated to create more than 34,000 jobs over the life of the projects.
